Ninja Words – Fast Like a Ninja

Screen shot 2009-10-20 at 5.42.26 AMWhen I first heard about this dictionary from a new writing blog, You Can Write Well, I thought it was kind of a weird concept. Then I realized, when you want to complete a writing assignment, shaving some seconds off of your writing time could save you huge amounts of time in the future.

Enter Ninja Words, a dictionary that aims to give you the best definition of a word as quickly as possible. Direct from the website:

Ninjas are three things:

  1. They’re smart
  2. They’re accurate
  3. They’re really fast

Ninjawords is based on these principles.

The website lives up to its name, with definitions appearing almost instantly, and in an organized and easy-to-read format. The page loads with just the logo, the search bar, and the footer navigation. As you define words, it loads them “twitter-style” with the most recent on top. In addition, the website will keep track of your definition history so you can quickly scroll to the right word. You can even delete your history with just one click.

When you don’t want to spend time surfing through a more complex dictionary, Ninja Words is a much more elegant solution. Plus, they have an Iphone app!

Bonus Tips:

  1. Separate words with a comma ( , ) to compare the definitions.
  2. You can add Ninja Words to Firefox by clicking the down arrow on your search bar and hitting “Add NinjaWords”
  3. Click “link to this page” to create a webpage with a list of words & definitions.
  4. You have to enter all words as lowercase. The dictionary doesn’t like capitals.

Haha no problem. I like the extensiveness of dictionary.com, but when it comes down to just getting a quick definition, this is a great resource.

OOWAHCAAA! Yeah I might start using this if and when I need to grasp the meanings of ridiculous words used by some crazy ass mofos. Other than that, the built-in spell-check in Firefox is a life-saver. I would have given up blogging if it weren’t for that feature. No joke.

Thanks for stopping by! Firefox is an awesome browser for a number of reasons, but the spell checker is definitely helpful!
